Week One: Party Hardy
3:53 PMWell, the BYU adventure has officially begun! I moved in to my new apartment on the 24th of August, and I've been on campus basically the whole time since then (minus the very necessary grocery trip and the not-so-necessary Target trip... Thanks Jess!)
This first week has been about the craziest thing of my life. All of the freshman had New Student Orientation (NSO), which is basically a bunch of seminars and activities designed to introduce the new kids to life at the Y. So not only was I partying through all of that (seriously, there was a rave-status dance EVERY NIGHT), but my roommates and I stayed out meeting people until at least 3 in the morning. Every night. The non-stop crazy is finally catching up with me and taking itself out on my early morning classes. I almost slept through 20 minutes of Book of Mormon this morning!
Also, my roommates are the coolest. I don't know if they are ok with me posting their names here, so for now I won't. But I live with the 5 coolest girls on campus, and y'all oughta be jealous.
The people at BYU are so insanely friendly! And they respond really well to random friendliness, too. Last Monday, before classes started, some of my ward members had a mini-Family Home Evening in the activity room of our building. There were about seven of us to start, but within an hour we had more than doubled because we invited a random group of guys walking by to come hang out with us. Now two of them are some of my favorite people on campus. We've had about forty complete strangers over to our apartment just to hang out, some of them we see all the time and some of them we saw only once. And it doesn't even matter! Really though, it's weird how quickly I've gotten so close with some of these people. Technically we are still basically strangers, and yet I feel like I have known some of them for my entire life. I'm so in love with everything about being a freshman here! It's one of the coolest things that I have ever done.
In terms of church, the spirit here is so intense everywhere you go. It's so great to start classes with an opening prayer and to have teachers outright say that they will be teaching about how the gospel fits in to whatever topic they are teaching, whether it's Multicultural America or the history of Psychology. My ward is really great. Our bishopric wants to focus the "theme" for the ward on finding The One, which is going to be a challenge since there are 178 people. 3 Relief Societies. 1 Elders' Quorum. 137 sisters. 41 ELDERS.
The freshman guy to girl ratio is the worst.
But other than that, everything here is perfect :)
I miss my family a ton; it's weird to start the school year without the traditional "first day of school" picture on the front porch (it was a bathroom selfie this year), or to be walking from my own place to my classes...Or to do homework in my room instead of the kitchen table.
I am so excited for all the opportunities here though! Keep an eye out here for a biggish announcement in the next week! ;)
Enjoy your week! Here are some pictures from my adventures so far:
